Alpha Zeta Eta, North Lake College's Phi Theta Kappa, the international two-year honor society, recently held an election for new officers.

Sarah Perez was elected president. Other officers are Daniel Sanchez, Vice-President of Leadership; Ida Jagne, Vice-President of Service; Samir Patel, Vice-President of Membership, and my position, Communication Officer.

Several positions remain open, including Secretary/Historian, Webmaster, and several chairman positions for various service projects throughout the year.

The new officers, alumni and advisors attended a leadership retreat in Cooper, Texas. They spent a weekend editing Chapter bylaws, discussing upcoming projects, reviewing the Phi Theta Kappa Hallmarks - all while engaging in leadership activities and fellowship.

The project highlighting the summer for members is the City of Irving's Fourth of July parade. Members have already begun creating a walking float, centering around the theme of immigration to America. NLC students - members and non-members - are welcome to help with preparation and volunteering on the day of the event.

Volunteers will receive breakfast and t-shirts during the parade. Alpha Zeta Eta won first place for the "Best Non-Commercial Walking Float" last year.

To join Phi Theta Kappa, a student must have a 3.5 GPA2 and have taken at least four credit classes. There is no deadline to join, but members should register at least several months before transferring to a university in order to meet deadlines on automatic transfer scholarships.

Members are not required to be active. Benefits of membership include transfer scholarships, networking, chances to apply for reserved scholarships throughout the year, attending trips, and building one's résumé.

An official, sealed transcript (from Admissions), a receipt showing the $85 one-time fee (paid at the Cashier's office), and application should be turned in to the Student Life office, A-223. Questions about running for office and membership can be sent to Samir Patel at the_ash_lad@yahoo.com Questions about volunteering at events can be sent to Connor Flynn at connorflynn1776@gmail.com.
