We’ve all seen this type of movie before. Somehow the dorky and average guy uses some sort of charm to land himself the insanely hot girl. Even though the plot has been done a million times, the witty dialect and humor in She’s Out of My League really saved it.
The film centers around Kirk (Jay Baruchel), who is a TSA agent at the Pittsburgh Airport and is the token nerd for the plot. Kirk’s lucky day comes Molly (Alice Eve) leaves her cell phone at the security check and Kirk finds it. Molly finds out he has her phone and asks to meet with her. That’s when all the fun begins.
Kirk’s world gets flipped upside down as he’s treated differently by everyone when they meet his new hot gal. He’s surrounded by his friends, who are also his co-workers, who don’t give Kirk’s relationship with Molly any chance of success. Kirk’s ex-girlfriend wants to get him back after she sees him moving on to better things, and even Kirk’s family starts to respect him more.
It’s not all fun and games though as Kirk and Molly both run into people and things that start to interfere with their chances of success.
Between all of that, though, the banter and quick-witted quips in the film are hysterical. Kirk and his friends have a love-hate relationship with each other, and their interactions are crucial to the success of this film.
Without the funny dialogue, She’s Out of My League would have instantly become another comedy we forgot about in a month.
To me, this movie is American Pie all grown up. It has amusing sexual satire, but without the immaturity level as most of the common ugly-guy-gets-hot-girl flicks.
Aside from the script being well-done, there is some slapstick humor in the movie that definitely adds a lot more laughable moments. Physical humor can be very funny or just ridiculous. She’s Out of My League combines witty and slapstick very well.
She’s Out of My League is rated R but only for sexual content and bad language. It does not have any nudity or violence. Some people may think this is a bad thing, but what it means for guys is that you can take your date to a really funny movie and not have her think you’re immature for liking this sort of thing. Men and women can both enjoy this film. I give it 3-½ stars out of 5.
