As the spring semester begins, officers and members of Alpha Zeta Eta, the North Lake College chapter of the two-year college honor society Phi Theta Kappa, are putting the finishing touches on the chapter’s Hallmark essays.

The essays, ranging from individual achievement nominations to broader essays discussing the chapter’s projects during the year, are the basis upon which the chapter is ranked for the year.  The essays will be submitted in early February and judging will be complete by April.

Alpha Zeta Eta officers will travel to two prestigious conferences to accept awards for the chapter’s achievements during the school year.  The Regional Convention will be held in Texas, where regional chapters will be honored.

The International Phi Theta Kappa 92nd Annual Convention will be held at the Walt Disney World Dolphin and Swan Resort  in Orlando, Fla., from April 8-10.

Keynote speakers, including MSNBC political analyst Rachel Maddow and CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, will explore the 2010-2011 Honors Study Topic, “The Democratization of Information: Power, Peril, and Promise.”

This spring, the chapter plans to induct numerous new members to expand the volunteer and fellowship base.  Four orientations will be held in early March — two on the Central Campus and one each on the North and South campuses—to give potential inductees and friends of the chapter a chance to acquire knowledge about both the history of the organization and the events and goals of our chapter.

In late April, the chapter will hold a formal induction in the Performance Hall to honor all new members and provide them with further insight into the society’s workings and goals.  Exact dates are currently being finalized, so check next month’s paper for more information.

If you want to help your community while engaging in scholarly pursuits and fellowship, don’t hesitate.  Even if you don’t meet the membership criteria listed below, you are more than welcome to help out and participate in many activities.

If you become a member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, you will have access not only to chapter events, but also inexpensive trips to various scholarly conferences and exclusive  Phi Theta Kappa scholarships.  To become a member, you need a 3.5 overall GPA in nondevelopmental credit courses, with at least 12 hours of coursework.  If you meet these criteria, you can become a member by filling out the application form available at: www.ptk.org/supplies/newmbr_app.pdf, paying the one-time membership fee of $85 dollars to the North Lake Cashier’s office, and delivering the fee receipt and application form to William Videtto, chapter co-advisor, in the President’s Suite in the G-Building.

If you have any questions or would like to be added to our weekly e-mailing list, please contact me at  vpofmembership@alphazetaeta.org.
